Weekend Adventure: Shantiniketan

Last weekend, the five of us went on a weekend trip to Shantiniketan which is about 162 km away. It takes about 3-4 hours to get there by train.

Shantiniketan means ‘peaceful abode’. It’s where West Bengal’s famous poet, composer freedom fighter and overall renaissance man, Rabindranath Tagore, resided. It’s also the location of the picturesque university Visva Bharati which was founded by Tagore.

The trip was filled with many ups and downs, but overall it was a really nice experience. I was happy to get out of the city for a while and hang out in a small town. Most people got around by bicycle or cycle rickshaws there. A few of us even rented bikes and cycled around the university on Sunday. It was a pleasant change to have some independence and cycle on my own, especially after getting ripped off by the cycle rickshaw wallahs the day before.
